New Delhi/IBNS: Delhi on Wednesday recorded a new high in COVID-19 cases with 1,009 fresh infections in the last 24 hours, a 60 per cent rise from yesterday.

The positivity rate in the national capital has gone up to 5.7 per cent.

After a steady fall in Covid cases, Delhi has seen a spike in new infections with the positivity rate registering a nearly three-fold rise between April 11 and 18, according to the Delhi Health Department's data.

Despite a spurt in Covid cases in Delhi, hospitalisation has so far been low, which accounts for less than three per cent of the total active cases, according to government data.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Wednesday reinforced the mask mandate in the national capital making not wearing the same in public places a punishable offence attracting a fine of Rs 500, officials said.

The announcement came after a meeting of DDMA was held Wednesday in view of the uptick in Covid-19 cases.

The meeting was chaired by the Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Health Minister Satyendar Jain and several health experts.

Meanwhile, it was also decided in the meeting that the schools will remain open, according to the officials.

The agency is expected to release detailed Covid safety SOPs after discussing them with experts.

The Delhi Government will also issue detailed SOPs shortly for all schools.

Schools across Delhi-NCR have sprung into action following a spike in Covid cases and are taking various measures, including frequent sanitisation, to restrict the spread of the virus.

The Delhi government has recently directed the school authorities to temporarily shut specific wings or the whole school (if required) in case a student or teacher is found infected.

India registered yet another day of a spike in COVID-19 as 2,067 new cases were registered in the past 24 hours, as per data released by the Ministry of Health on Wednesday.

Delhi accounted for more than 30 per cent of the total cases.
