New Delhi/IBNS: Giving a ray of hope to 1.3 billion people, the central government on Thursday said the dry run of Covid-19 vaccine will be held in all states on Jan 2, 2021, media reports said.

The dry runs in the next year will be held at specified locations in each state.

In the dry runs, participants will receive dummy Covid-19 vaccines to test the mechanisms ahead of the actual vaccination drive.

The government made the announcement as the Drugs Controller General of India has hinted that the Covid-19 vaccine is around the corner.

"Probably we will have a new year with something in hand, that's what I can hint at," Drugs Controller General VG Somani said.

Earlier, the dry runs were held in four states on Dec 28 and 29.

The central government on Wednesday took up the applications filed by the Serum Institute of India, Bharat Biotech and Pfizer for the emergency use of Covid-19 vaccine, for consideration.

The expert panel will meet on Friday over the emergency use of vaccines.

India on Thursday added over 21,000 Covid-19 cases from across 36 states and union territories.

With 21,822 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, the Covid-19 tally has touched 1,02,66,674.

In the same period, 299 people, who were infected with the virus, died apparently due to the contagion.

The Covid-19 toll has now touched 1,48,738.
