New Delhi/UNI: The national capital on Sunday yet again reported a single-day highest spike of 25,462 fresh cases of COVID-19 while 161 people lost their lives.

The new additions took the City's caseload to 8,53,460 and the death toll to 12,121. The positivity rate in Delhi has risen to 29.74 per cent from Saturday's 24.56 per cent. The unprecedented hike in active cases has led to a shortage of Covid beds in the Capital.

As per the Delhi government's official Corona website, at 2030 hrs, a total of 3011 COVID-19 beds were available while only 51 COVID-19 ICU beds left for critical patients.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, earlier in the day, averred that the COVID situation has worsened in the national capital. He also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to reserve 7,000 of 10,000 beds available in central governments hospitals for the COVID-infected patients.

As many as 85,620 people were tested in the past day while 20,159 people cured and discharged taking the total recoveries to 7,66,398.

Currently, there are 34,938 COVID patients under home isolation across the city. The number of active cases is 74,941 which includes patients under home isolation. Containment zones also rose to 13,259.

Meanwhile, the government vaccinated 67,448 people in the last 24 hours out of which 54,306 beneficiaries received the first dose while 13,142 were administered the second dose. Till now, cumulatively, 25,65,918 people have received a vaccine jab in the national capital.

The COVID situation has drastically deteriorated in the past few days. On the previous day, the Capital added 24,375 fresh cases while 167 more lives were lost.

The city is currently under a 55-hour-long weekend curfew that will end on Monday morning at 0500 hrs. To curb the spread of the virus, Kejriwal had announced a series of restrictions earlier this week.

Besides night curfew, the restrictions included a ban on all gatherings -- social, religious or political.
