China: Chang'e-6 lunar lander touches down on far side of moon to collect sample

Elevating its space status, China’s Chang’e-6 lunar lander on Sunday touched down on the far side of the moon.

According to reports, the lander will aim to bring back samples from the moon.

The Chang’e-6 probe landed in the South Pole-Aitken Basin, where it will begin to collect samples from the lunar surface, the China National Space Administration announced as quoted by CNN.

It is the second time a mission has reached the far side of the moon.

It was with its Chang’e-4 probe that China had touched the region in 2019.

The mission, which commenced on May 3, is expected to last for 53 days,

Multiple nations are expanding their lunar programmes in recent times.

Last year, India landed its mission Chandrayaan 3 to the moon while Russia's  Luna 25 probe crashed into the surface of it.

Japan landed its spacecraft on the moon in January with its Moon Sniper lander.
