Assam floods turn deadlier: 78 killed, more than 3 lakh remain affected
Guwahati/IBNS: The death toll in the devastating floods in Assam has risen to 78, while more than three lakh people continue to remain affected across the state, media reports said on Thursday.
According to the latest official figures, the flood situation has shown only marginal improvement, with thousands of people still displaced and several districts grappling with inundation.
Death toll rises
The toll increased after three more deaths were reported in the last 24 hours—two in Sivasagar district and one in Golaghat district.
The floods, triggered by heavy rainfall and overflowing rivers, have claimed dozens of lives over the past several weeks.

Over three lakh people still affected
More than three lakh people across seven districts continue to be affected by the floods.
The worst-hit districts are:
- Charaideo
- Sivasagar
- Golaghat
- Jorhat
- Nagaon
- Biswanath
- Kamrup Metropolitan
Charaideo worst-hit
Among the affected districts, Charaideo remains the worst-hit, with over one lakh people impacted by the floods.
It is followed by Sivasagar and Jorhat, where large areas continue to remain under water, affecting homes, agriculture and public infrastructure.
Relief and rescue efforts continue
State authorities and disaster response agencies are continuing relief and rescue operations in the flood-hit areas.
Relief camps and distribution centres remain operational to provide food, drinking water and other essential supplies to displaced families, while officials are monitoring the situation as water levels gradually recede in some parts of the state.
The authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow official advisories as the flood situation continues to evolve.
