5.3 magnitude earthquake hits Athens, no casualty

Athens, July 19 (IBNS): An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale hit Greece capital Athens on Friday, as per  United States Geological Survey website.

However, some media reports said the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.1 on the Richter Scale.

The 5.1 magnitude tremor struck 23 kilometers (14 miles) northwest of the capital, according to the Athens Institute of Geodynamics, reported CNN.

According to lcoal media reports, people rushed to the streets from buildings as they felt the earthquake.

No casualty or damage to property has been reporte so far.

The earthquake was particularly felt in the centre of Athens. There were reports that the fire service rescued over a dozen people trapped in elevators, following the power outage, reported BBC.

According to BBC report, the head of the anti-quake protection agency, Efthymios Lekkas, told Greeks to remain calm.
