Why power surplus Bangladesh wants to buy electricity from Adani

New Delhi: In his meeting with Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani said his company is committed to commissioning the 1600 MW Godda Power Project and dedicated transmission line to Bangladesh by the end of this year.

According to the plan, the coal-fired plant will be operational by December 16, which coincides with Bangladesh's Bijoy Dibosh.

Bangladesh has a high electrification rate of 97 percent, which means that nearly its entire population has electricity. While its peak demand is about 15,000 MW, the country has also increased its total power generation capacity to 25,700 megawatts (MW).

In 2016, it had created a master plan for its power sector to raise the share of coal to 35 percent of power generation by 2041.

As Bangladesh struggles to keep fuel costs in check, the country has seen a return of frequent power outages since June this year.

Bangladesh has been forced to cancel plans for 10 coal power plants owing to funding issues and environmental concerns.

The country's current renewables capacity is inadequate to fulfill the growing power demand.
