Union Budget 2025-26 to be tabled on Feb 1; Parliament session begins Jan 28

The Union Budget for 2025–26 will be presented in Parliament on February 1, which falls on a Sunday, with the Economic Survey scheduled to be tabled two days earlier on January 29.

Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran will present the Economic Survey, which outlines the state of the economy and sets the context for the annual budget.

The Budget Session of Parliament will begin on January 28 and continue until April 2, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju said on Friday.

President Droupadi Murmu has approved the schedule and will address a joint sitting of both Houses on the opening day of the session, as per parliamentary convention.

“On the recommendation of the Government of India, the Hon’ble President has approved the summoning of both Houses of Parliament for the Budget Session 2026. The session will commence on January 28, 2026, and continue till April 2, 2026,” Rijiju said in a post.

The session will be held in two phases. The first phase will conclude on February 13, after which Parliament will break for a recess of nearly a month. The second phase will begin on March 9 and run until April 2.

During the recess, department-related standing committees will examine the demands for grants of various Union ministries and departments, a key part of the budgetary scrutiny process.

While Parliament generally does not sit on Sundays, special sittings have been held in the past under exceptional circumstances, including during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and on May 13, 2012, to mark the 60th anniversary of the first sitting of Parliament.
