Mumbai/Kolkata, Feb 27 (IBNS): Tata Power has reached out to 136 villages under its Social Capital and Infrastructure initiative-Sanrachna, by creating 702 Self Help Groups that benefited over 84,502 people across locations.

The objectives of the Sanrachna initiative emanate from 3 main efforts that are aimed at overall community development namely - Women’s Empowerment, Building Infrastructure and, Promotion of Government Schemes. The company drafted and implemented various programs to develop the communities and provide the villagers with employment, skill-upgradation and access to basic infrastructure.

With the objective of promoting gender equality and women empowerment by implementing income generation training and skill upgradation, Tata Power succeeded in engaging 9928 SHG members across locations. This has helped towards a 37% increase in number of trained members since FY2015.

Identifying that the Khandke region of Ahmendnagar district, Maharashtra, is a drought prone region, Tata Power in association with Bosco Gramin Vikas Kendra NGO, constructed two check dams at Ranjani and Devgaon village. These check dams did not only provide irrigation to farms, but also recharged 30-40 individual and public wells along with water sources like ponds, streams, rivers, etc.

Tata Power also provided technical assistance to the government of Maharashtra in setting up 8 watershed management systems in Ranjani and Devgaon villages. More than 115 households from these two villages have been benefitted by these initiatives.

Tata Power familiarized 633 school students with the AABY scheme - AAM ADAMI BIMA YOJANA (AABY SCHEME); a social security scheme of the Central Government implemented through Social Justice Department of Government of Maharashtra. Till FY’16 the company impacted 2180 lives through interventions aimed at securing lives through Government Schemes in Dherand.

Speaking on this achievement, Ashok Sethi, COO & ED, Tata Power, said, “We, at Tata Power have taken up the onus of developing the communities around our areas of operation as it gives us a great sense of gratification when we are able to take them a step towards development. We will continue to work towards creating positive impact on the lives of people and develop initiatives that promote gender equality and the social development of children.”
