Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has proposed three potential locations for Bengaluru's second international airport and submitted the plan to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation on Thursday, Deccan Herald reported.

According to the proposal, two of the suggested sites are situated along Kanakapura Road in south Bengaluru, diagonally opposite the existing Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

One of these locations falls within Bangalore Urban district, while the other is in Ramanagara district.

The site near Harohalli, which is close to the Green Line’s last Metro station, spans around 4,800 acres, while the second site measures approximately 5,000 acres, the report said.

The third proposed location is along Kunigal Road in Nelamangala, with around 5,200 acres identified for the project.

The state government has assured the Ministry that it is ready to provide a minimum of 4,500 acres at any of the proposed sites, Moneyconrol reported.

Following standard procedure, the Ministry will deploy a team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to assess these sites.

Based on the team's evaluation, a financial feasibility study will be conducted before a final decision is made.

The Karnataka government has also highlighted that all three locations are within a 50-km radius of Bengaluru city centre and offer easy access to major roads and highways, aligning with the Ministry’s criteria for economically viable airports.

Passenger traffic at Kempegowda International Airport has been growing steadily, highlighting the need for a second international airport.

Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) reported a 9% increase in passenger traffic in 2024, with 40.73 million passengers compared to 37.2 million in 2023.

As demand for air travel continues to rise, the state government is pushing forward with its plans to ensure Bengaluru remains well-connected with the establishment of a second international airport.
