India’s tea exports surge 10% in 2024, reaching near-decade high

New Delhi: India exported nearly 255 million kg of tea worth ₹7,111 crore in 2024, marking a 10% increase from 232 million kg in 2023, Moneycontrol reported.

The export value also saw a 15% rise from ₹6,161 crore the previous year, the report said.

Mohit Agarwal, director of Asian Tea, highlighted the dual impact of rising exports and a 110-million-kg drop in domestic production, which boosted profitability.

Prices for Assam and West Bengal teas surged by 20% for leaf tea and 26% for dust tea.

Agarwal noted growing demand in CIS countries, the US, and the Middle East, attributing the trend to stricter compliance with Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) norms and early closure of tea estates in Assam and West Bengal, the report said.

While exports are expected to remain strong in 2025, a larger crop yield could moderate prices.
