Game-changer for Chennai: Indian Railways sanctions major track doubling project
Indian Railways on Tuesday announced the approval of the 68-km Arakkonam–Chengalpattu Doubling Project under Southern Railway at an estimated cost of ₹993 crore, reaffirming its commitment to safer, faster, and more efficient rail transportation across the country.
The section forms a crucial part of Chennai’s suburban circular rail network, connecting key transit hubs including Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, and Arakkonam.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Arakkonam–Chengalpattu Doubling Project will play a vital role in easing congestion on the busy Chennai suburban rail network while significantly improving punctuality and operational efficiency.
He said the project will strengthen both passenger and freight movement along the corridor, facilitating the transportation of key commodities such as cement, automobiles, food grains, iron, and steel.
At present, the existing single-line section is operating at high capacity utilisation, with traffic demand expected to rise further in the coming years, making infrastructure augmentation essential.
The doubling work is expected to reduce train detention time, improve service punctuality, and enable an increase in the frequency of suburban train operations.
The route serves several major industrial and economic hubs, including Mahindra World City, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, and Irungattukottai, which house significant automobile, cement, and manufacturing industries.
The proposed Parandur Airport project near Kancheepuram is also located close to the alignment, further enhancing the strategic significance of this rail corridor.
The approval of the Arakkonam–Chengalpattu Doubling Project marks another major milestone in Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernise rail infrastructure, enhance network capacity, and improve operational efficiency across critical routes.
The project is expected to strengthen suburban and freight connectivity, support regional industrial growth, and provide faster, safer, and more reliable transportation services for passengers and businesses alike.
