Bengaluru Metro's Yellow Line, connecting Electronics City, set to open by May 2025
Bengaluru: Karnataka’s capital city, Bengaluru, is all set to have its much-awaited Yellow Line Metro, connecting RV Road to Bommasandra and passing through the tech hub of Electronics City, operational by May 2025, Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar said on March 4, media reports said.
According to a Moneycontrol report, responding to a query from Bommanahalli MLA M Satish Reddy in the state assembly, Shivakumar confirmed, "The Yellow Line (19.1 km) from RV Road to Bommasandra will be opened for public service by May 2025."
Providing an update on the Pink Line (21.2 km, Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara), Shivakumar stated that the 7.5 km elevated stretch from Kalena Agrahara (Gottigere) to Tavarekere (Swagath Cross) is expected to be operational by December 2025, while the 13.7 km underground section from Dairy Circle to Nagawara is slated for completion by December 2026, the report said.
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) is currently grappling with a shortage of rolling stock, contributing to the delay in commencing Yellow Line operations, sources familiar with the matter told Moneycontrol.
According to a BMRCL official, operations on the Yellow Line are likely to begin with three trains running at a 30-minute frequency.
"We expect to receive the third train by April, followed by the fourth train, which will help us start operations," the official was quoted as saying by Moneycontrol.
Trial runs on the Yellow Line began on March 7, 2024. In February 2025, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (South Circle), AM Chowdhary, inspected two CRRC Nanjing Puzhen trains—one imported from China and the other assembled in India by Titagarh Rail Systems.
The Yellow Line, initially scheduled to open in December 2021, faced prolonged delays primarily due to disruptions in rolling stock supply.
In December 2019, CRRC Nanjing Puzhen was awarded a contract to supply 216 coaches to BMRCL, with a delivery timeline of 173 weeks.
However, the Indo-China border standoff in June 2020, coupled with CRRC's struggle to identify a local manufacturing partner under the Make in India initiative, delayed coach supply.
Challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, foreign direct investment restrictions, and trade regulations further stalled the process.
Eventually, CRRC partnered with Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail Systems for local manufacturing and supply of coaches.
