Bata India modernises Batanagar plant with ₹300 million tech upgrade to boost global footprint

Kolkata: Footwear giant Bata India has announced a ₹300 million investment in its Batanagar manufacturing unit, equipping it with cutting-edge automation technology to enhance quality, efficiency, and global competitiveness.

This move is part of the brand’s broader transformation strategy.

The investment centres around installing Polyurethane Direct Injection Process (PUDIP) and IM EVA machinery for its Floatz and Bata Industrial lines.

These systems incorporate robotic spraying, automated roughening arms, and mould handling processes, improving product precision and production standards.

“This investment reflects our deep commitment to modernising our manufacturing and leading with quality,” said Anjan Kundu, Head – Supply Chain Management at Bata India.

“We are bringing back the glory to Batanagar,” he added, underscoring the company’s focus on innovation and customer experience.

The Batanagar factory follows stringent safety protocols and is considered a symbol of industrial transformation for West Bengal and the country.

Its legacy dates back to the 1930s, when Thomas Bata’s visit catalysed the township’s emergence as a shoemaking hub.

In parallel, Bata India has opened around 130 new stores over the past year—over half of them in smaller towns—and continues to scale its franchise model to expand across Bharat.

The company is also investing in community development through its Bata Children’s Program, which supports underserved children with education, mentorship, and footwear.

Bata India says it is redefining its heritage with a renewed focus on quality, sustainability, and innovation as it aims to "shoe the world" from India.
