Yogi Adityanath directs UP authority to 'keep check' on cow slaughter during Eid festivity

Lucknow, Aug 20 (IBNS): In a bid to prevent any unwanted incident during the ongoing Kawad yatra (also called Kanwar Yatra) by the Hindu pilgrims, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi  Adityanath has asked the state police to remain vigilant and keep a check on cow slaughter during the Muslim festival of Eid.

The CM reportedly made the direction while interacting with officials via video conferencing on Sunday from his residence.

He said that the current month of Shravan is going on, in which Kawad yatra is going on, with millions of pilgrims carrying the Ganga water to worship Lord Shiva in the month of Sravana.

In view of Eid-ul-Azha, the police should remain vigilant so that no unpleasant incidents happen or prohibited animals (cow) slaughtered, he said in a tweet post in Hindi.

Keeping in mind the sensitive zones and places, he instructed the cops to be prepared and alerted.

Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated on Aug 22. During this festival, Muslim people sacrifice animals and cattle.

UP is among the 20 out of 29 Indian states prohibiting either the slaughter or sale of cows.

In the Kawad Yata, the pilgrims carry two pitches of holy water from the river Ganga balanced on heavily decorated poles called kanwar.

The Kanwaris, as the pilgrims are called, collect the water from Haridwar, Gaumukh, and Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Sultanganj in Bihar. Returning to their bases, they use the water to offer it at the local Lord Shiva shrines or Shivalingas on the Amavasya (new moon) day, or the Maha Shivratri day.
