Yashwant Sinha flags off 3000-km Gandhi Shanti Yatra in Mumbai
Mumbai/IBNS: Former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha on Thursday flagged off his 3000-km Gandhi Shanti Yatra to push for the scrapping of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, here.
The yatra was flagged off by waiving of green flags.
Sinha, a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) man and now a critic of the Narendra Modi government, has planned to undertake the yatra across five states including Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana and reach New Delhi by Jan 30.
With Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi's portrait kept in the middle, the launch of the yatra was marked by the presence of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar and Congress leader Ashok Chavan.
Comparing the yatra with the one started by activist-politician Jayprakash Narayan in mid-1970s against then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Sinha said, "The JP movement has already started acorss the nation."
"A leader must be like Sharad Pawar," the former BJP leader said praising the NCP chief.
The yatra has been supported by the NCP, Congress and Left.
The CAA, if implemented, will grant citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi but not Muslim refugees who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan before 2015.
