Won't give land in South Mumbai, go to Pakistan border: Nitin Gadkari to Navy

| | Jan 12, 2018, at 03:01 pm

Mumbai, Jan 12 (IBNS): Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has triggered a controversy when he questioned that why 'all Navy officers need to stay in South Mumbai' and said that 'not an inch of land' would be given to the Navy to build flats or quarters in the area, drawing criticisms from opposition party Congress.

"They came to me for a plot of land but I said I will not give them even an inch of land," the Minister was quoted as saying by the media during an event here on Thursday.

"Everyone wants to build quarters and flats on south Mumbai's prime land. We respect you but I feel that you should go to Pakistan border and do patrolling there," he said.

Meanwhile, the Congress attacked Nitin Gadkari for his remarks and said it was 'unacceptable'.

Reacting to the remarks made by the senior leader of the BJP, Congress leader Randeep S Surjewala ‏tweeted: "Shameful & Unacceptable! Ex BJP President & Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari insults ‘Indian Navy’, questions their valour and dedication.Pseudo-Nationalist BJP now wants to issue certificates of ‘loyalty’ to India’s armed forces."

The Congress party tweeted: "BJP is the first to use the Armed Forces for electoral gains, but when it comes to benefits, their real intent comes to the fore."
