Won't accept CAA, NRC: Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata/IBNS: An hour after meeting visiting Prime Minister Narendra Modi here, West Bengal CM Narendra Modi on Saturday targeted the Centre over the new citizenship law and said the movement against the Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizenswill continue.

Participating in a demonstration held by Trinamool Chhatra Parishad in Kolkata, Banerjee said: "I met PM today and told him that we won't accept NRC and CAA."

"The Anti-NRC and CAA movement will continue," she said.

"We are against them," she added.

Amid ongoing protests across the city over the newly passed citizenship law by the Centre, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Narendra Modi met in Raj Bhavan in Kolkata on Saturday.

Banerjee said she informed the PM that she is against the newly passed citizenship law by the Centre.

Banerjee has criticised Modi over the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) issues in recent times. Banerjee 's Trinamool Congress has been opposing the Centre's moves. She participated in several protest rallies against the law in recent times.

"It was part of my courtesy to meet the PM," Banerjee told reporters after meeting the PM.

"I informed him that that the state is scheduled to get Rs, 38000 crore from the Centre and we asked him to look into the matter," she said highlighting the key issues discussed during her meeting with the PM.

"I informed him we are against NPR, NRC and CAA. I asked him to withdraw them," she said.

After arriving in Kolkata, Modi reached Raj Bhavan where he was reportedly welcomed by the CM.

Meanwhile, protests against the amended citizenship law is taking place in different parts fo the city including Hastings More and Dum Dum.

Protesters could be seen shouting slogans against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC).

They were heard shouting slogans like “Go Back, Modi.”
