Women's Commission and Delhi Governor issue summons to Delhi police

New Delhi, Feb 2 (IBNS): Delhi Police on Tuesday received two summons, one from the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) for failing to submit data pertaining to crimes committed against women in the past five months and the other from the office of Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, regarding the alleged beating up of students while they were protesting against the death of Hyderabad's Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula.

According to media reports, DCW has asked Delhi police commissioner BS Bassi to appear before it on Feb 8 and explain why his department has failed to provide information on crimes against women which the commission had repeatedly asked for in the past.

“The commission takes strong note of the fact that despite sending various letters and notices and despite passage of several months, you have unjustifiably failed to provide crucial information sought by the Commission, which is imperative for the Commission on the issue of women’s safety and safeguards for women in Delhi,” the summon read.

Joint commissioner of police (central range) SK Gautam, who is heading the investigation regarding the alleged beating up of students while they were protesting against the death of Vemula has been asked by Jung to explain the apparent manhandling by police personnel as shown in a video shared by students on social media, as per local reports.
