Who kept India safe in 1947, 1965 & 1971 wars? Chidambaram asks BJP

New Delhi, Apr 26 (UNI): Taking a swipe at the Bharatiya Janata Party, senior Congress party leader P Chidambaram on Friday countered Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ruling party's president Amit Shah and questioned them who kept India safe during the 1947, 1965 and 1971 wars.

In a series of tweets, Mr Chidambaram questioned Mr Amit Shah who had said Indian National Congress cannot keep the nation safe.

The former Finance Minister asked: "Who kept the country safe in the three wars fought in 1947, 1965 and 1971?"

Appreciating the armed forces of being professional in their action and conduct, the senior leader said, "The country was safe before anyone had even heard of Mr Modi or Mr Shah. That is because we have a professional Army, Air Force and Navy."

Saying that in the past five years, violence on dalits and minorities were reported in large number, Mr Chidambaram said: "What is the meaning of keeping India safe if different sections of the people - women, Dalits, SCs, STs, minorities, academics, writers, journalists etc - are unsafe?"

He expressed hope that in the ensuing elections, the people will vote against the ruling dispensation and give the BJP a befitting reply.

"Mr Modi thinks he can rule India by keeping the people in a state of fear. The people will vote for a country 'where the mind is without fear',"he added.
