Who is Dr. Umar Mohammad? The doctor-turned-terror suspect linked to the Delhi blast
New Delhi/IBNS: The preliminary probe has suspected Dr. Umar Mohammad, who is a doctor-turned-bomber, may have caused the blast near Red Fort Metro Station in Delhi out of panic after his network collapsed, a report by Business Today said.
A massive explosion near Delhi’s iconic Red Fort on Monday evening left at least nine people dead and over twenty injured, after a Hyundai i20 car carrying three passengers suddenly exploded near Gate No. 1 of Lal Qila Metro Station, close to the Gauri Shankar and Jain temples.
The blast occurred around 6:52 pm, shaking the high-security area and sending panic across Old Delhi.
According to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, the car—bearing a Haryana registration number—was moving slowly toward a red light when it came to a halt and exploded moments later.
A CCTV video has emerged showing the suspect driving the Hyundai i20 car, which exploded near the iconic Red Fort on Monday, leaving at least eight people dead.
According to media reports, the footage showed suspected terrorist Dr. Mohammad Umar, who was at large.
Sources told India Today that Umar was in the car and is believed to have planned the attack along with two of his associates.
Soon after the explosion, the car’s registered owner, identified as Salman, was detained by Delhi Police.
During interrogation, he revealed that he had already sold the vehicle to another person.
Further investigation uncovered that the car had reportedly been sold to Tariq, a resident of Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir, raising suspicions of a possible terror link.
Who is Dr. Umar Mohammad?
Born in Pulwama in 1989, he is said to be a doctor by training and hails from Pulwama (Jammu & Kashmir) originally; he was reportedly employed with a medical college in Faridabad, Haryana.
Security footage shows the car parked near the Red Fort Metro Station parking lot for about three hours before the explosion, with the driver inside.
Umar was linked to two doctors- Adeel Ahmad Rather and Mujammil Shakeel- who were arrested earlier this week.
While Adeel and Shakeel were arrested along with 2,900 kg of suspected ammonium nitrate after raids in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, Umar escaped.
Hours later, Uman was seen driving the Hyundai car in Delhi.
Investigators suspect Umar may have caused the blast out of panic or was asked to strike early.
