West Bengal to be renamed as Bengal soon

Kolkata, Aug 2 (IBNS): West Bengal cabinet on Tuesday adopted a proposal to convert state's name into Bengal.

After a cabinet meeting, West Bengal Education minister Partha Chatterjee told the journalists, during a press conference here at state's main administrative building Nabanna, "Our cabinet has adopted a proposal to rename West Bengal or Paschim Banga as only Bengal in English and Bangla or Bongo in Bengali."

"We will hold a all-party meet, in the presence of honourable speaker of West Bengal assembly. Then, we will put forward the proposal before the state assembly for approval during a special session on August 26," Chatterjee added.

If West Bengal assembly passes the proposal, it would be forwarded to the parliament.

Large number of state's folks, intellectuals and businessmen welcomed the initiative of state government to rename West Bengal.

Singer-turned-Union-Minister Babul Supriyo told IBNS, "It's a good proposal. I think, the new name should be Bangla in Bengali and Bengal in English. Paschim Bango should not be renamed as Bango as there is a musical instrument named Bango."

Academician Pabitra Sarkar said, "This name change is good."

Meanwhile, opposing the proposal, writer Tilottama Majumder said, "I'm opposing it because the name- 'West Bengal' is carrying many historical moments. What is the need to change state's name suddenly, I don't understand."

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been trying to change state's name since she came to power in 2011.
