Birbhum, Mar 9 (IBNS): Activists of West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) allegedly beat up students of Visva Bharati University who were demonstrating against cutting down of trees at Shyambati area near Shantiniketan in Birbhum district on Friday, reports said.

According to reports, a group of Visva Bharati University's pupils, including several women and international students, on Friday morning staged agitation against cutting of trees at Shyambati area where state Public Works Department (PWD) has been razing a large number of trees for road widening project.

During the protest, several activists of the TMC, led by local leader Nurul Huda Kaji, reached the scene and they allegedly thrashed agitating students to disperse them from the spot.

Protesters also claimed that women and international students of the prestigious university were also beaten up badly by the TMC workers in presence of police force.

Several agitating students were reportedly injured in the sudden attack and they were rushed to a local hospital.

Later, a heavy police force reached the scene and evacuated protesters and TMC activists from the area to bring the situation under control.

After a heavy police deployment, tree cutting was resumed again at the area, according to local police officials.
