English medium schools will have to make Bengali an optional subject from Class I so that the students can study it either as a second or third language."

Bengali has to be a subject in any of the three languages opted by students while Urdu, Gurumukhi, Nepali and Ol-chiki may be taken up by students as other languages of the medium of instructions.

The announcement made by the Education minister clearly stated that the English medium schools must make provisions to teach Bengali as a second or third language.
