'We are the biggest fugitives’: Lalit Modi, Vijay Mallya video sparks anger online
Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi on Monday appeared to mock Indian authorities after sharing a video from fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya’s birthday celebration, referring to the two of them as the “biggest fugitives of India.”
In the video posted on Instagram, Lalit Modi is heard saying, “We are the two fugitives, the biggest fugitives of India,” prompting sharp reactions online.
Captioning the post, Modi wrote, “Let me do something to break the internet down again. Something for you folks. Wat your heart out with envy (sic).”
The video quickly drew criticism from social media users, many accusing the duo of openly ridiculing Indian law enforcement agencies.
“What a mockery they have made of the Indian government,” one user commented, while another wrote, “They are laughing at Indian CBI/ED.”
Some questioned the authorities’ inability to bring the two back to India, calling it a “shame” that such a video could be made.
Vijay Mallya was declared a Fugitive Economic Offender in January 2019 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The former liquor baron, accused of defaulting on multiple bank loans and facing money-laundering charges, left India in March 2016.
Lalit Modi, the founding commissioner of the Indian Premier League, has been living abroad since 2010 amid allegations of tax evasion, money laundering, and irregularities linked to the IPL.
The Enforcement Directorate has alleged that he manipulated the IPL’s 2009 broadcast rights deal in exchange for kickbacks exceeding ₹125 crore.
