WB hooch tragedy: Death toll reaches 23, main accused arrested

Kolkata, Oct 1 (IBNS): The death toll in the West Bengal hooch tragedy rose to 23 on Thursday, reports said.

According to reports, as many as 50 people are still battling for lives in hospital.

The tragedy struck as few men of two villages in East Midnapore district drunk liquor on Saturday evening and fell sick after consuming spurious liquor. They were rushed to nearby hospital.

The parade of deaths started on Sunday at  Narikeldaha and Kiyarana villages of Tamluk sub-division in East Midnapore district.

Meanwhile, police on Thursday arrested the main accused Manik Rui Das and Chandan Santra from Barasat in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

The East Midnapore district police had arrested 30 others in connection with this case earlier.

However, East Midnapore SP Alok Rajoria told IBNS: "Our investigation is currently underway. Main accused have been arrested and will be interrogated on the issue."

But, the police could not clarify the exact reason behind the deaths so far.
