‘Vulgarity and disgust’: DMK attacks Vijay over Trisha salute at I-Day event

Chennai/IBNS: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and actor Trisha Krishnan saluting each other during the state's 80th Independence Day celebrations has triggered a political controversy, with the principal Opposition DMK criticising the episode as a compromise of the dignity of the Chief Minister's office, media reports said.

The exchange between Vijay, who is serving his first term as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, and Trisha, who was seated in the front row during the ceremony, has drawn sharp reactions from the DMK.

DMK attacks Vijay over ceremony

In an editorial, the DMK criticised Trisha's presence in the front row and her exchange of salutes with Vijay during the Independence Day event.

The editorial, quoted by NDTV, said, "The dignity of Chief Minister Vijay, who hoisted the flag on Independence Day, flew in the air. Even people who voted for him could not stomach the sight of him, without any shame or embarrassment, making an actor sit in the front row and both saluting each other.

"It's such a person who thinks he can justify such vulgarity and disgust by doing it openly and blatantly, has today come as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu."

DMK questions Vijay's conduct

The editorial further claimed that even Vijay's fans and supporters of his political outfit, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), would not approve of such conduct by the Chief Minister.

The controversy comes amid continued public interest in Vijay's political career and his transition from the Tamil film industry to electoral politics.

Vijay and Trisha's equation

Vijay and Trisha have worked together in several Tamil films and have been the subject of longstanding speculation about their personal relationship. Neither has publicly confirmed the reported relationship.

The Independence Day ceremony has now brought their public interaction into the political spotlight, with the DMK using the episode to question the dignity and conduct expected from the state's Chief Minister.
