Violence rocks West Bengal's Kaliaganj after alleged rape, murder of minor girl

Kolkata: Violence engulfed West Bengal’s Kaliaganj on Saturday after a tribal girl was allegedly raped and murdered, media reports said.

The incident happened on Friday and the locals spotted the victim’s body later.

The girl was a resident of Gangua village of Uttar Dinajpur district. She went missing on Thursday after leaving her home for tuition. Despite an extensive search by her parents and villagers, she couldn’t be traced the whole night.

The irate locals clashed with the police and blocked roads. A heavy police force was deployed in the area to control the law-and-order situation in the area.

The locals also allegedly pelted stones at the police and burnt tires.

Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP's IT cell, shared a video showing police officials dragging the body of the victim. Malviya also said that the victim belonged to the Rajbongshi community.

"In this video, the body West Bengal Police is insensitively dragging is that of a minor rape and murder victim from the Rajbongshi community in Uttar Dinajpur’s Kaliaganj. Such haste is often seen when the purpose is to eliminate or dilute evidence and cover up the crime," Malviya tweeted.

According to North Dinajpur Superintendent of Police Sana Akhtar, the body of the minor girl has been sent for autopsy, India Today reported.

Akhtar also confirmed that two people have been arrested in connection with the alleged rape and murder of the girl. A bottle, which is suspected to contain poison, was discovered near the victim's body, the report added.

The investigation into the alleged crime is underway and a medical board has been formed to determine the cause of the girl's death. According to the police, no signs of injury were found on the victim's body, the report said.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognizance of the incident and has requested that the West Bengal Police ensure a proper investigation.

The commission has also requested that if the accusations are found to be correct, an FIR must be filed under the appropriate sections.
