Vinayak Damodar Savarkar once said there is nothing Indian about our Constitution, Rahul Gandhi targets Centre in Parliament

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday tried to corner the Bharatiya Janata Party on the floor of the Parliament by referring to Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar's remark where he said there "is nothing Indian about our Constitution".

Participating in the Lok Sabha debate on the constitution, Gandhi, who was seen holding the Constitution and Manusmriti in his hands, said: "'The worst thing about the Constitution of India is that there is nothing Indian about it. Manusmriti is that scripture that is most worshippable after the Vedas, and which, from ancient times, had begun the basis of our culture, customs, thought, and practices. This book for centuries has codified the spiritual and divine march of our nation. Today, Manusmriti is law'. These are the words of Savarkar."

Targeting the BJP, Gandhi said: "Those in the ruling side are defending the Constitution, but I want to ask you, do you stand by your leader's words? But when you defend the Constitution, you are ridiculing Savarkar and defaming him."

Referring to the Hathras incident, Rahul Gandhi said, " A few days ago I went to Hathras. Four years ago a girl was gang raped in Hathras. Those who committed the gang rape are roaming around outside today, while the girl's family is locked in their house."

"The girl's family cannot go out and the criminals threaten the victim's family every day," he said.

"After all, where is it written in the constitution that rapists should stay out? The constitution is not applicable in UP, Manusmriti is being applied there," Gandhi said.

Rahul Gandhi said the Congress-led INDIA alliance believes in Constitution.

"If the government does not re-locate the victim's family, then we all will together re-locate that family," he said.

In his bid to corner the government, Gandhi said the Centre is crushing the rights of the people.

"Just like Dronacharya cut Eklavya's thumb, this government is also cutting the thumb of the country. When this government hands over the country's assets to Adani, then the thumbs of small and big industries and businessmen of this country are cut," he said.

After Rahul Gandhi spoke in the Parliament, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said the Congress leader was incorrect and shared a letter signed by former PM Indira Gandhi on X.

Rijiju wrote on X: "This document is for Rahul Gandhi Ji as he made an incorrect statement in Lok Sabha about Veer Savarkar. Indira Gandhi."
