Vijay seeks Congress support to form Tamil Nadu government: KC Venugopal

In a dramatic twist after the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results, Vijay has reached out to the Indian National Congress for support to form the next government in the state, according to senior Congress leader K C Venugopal.

The move comes after Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) delivered a stunning electoral performance, shaking up Tamil Nadu politics and breaking the decades-long dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Venugopal said the Congress’s Tamil Nadu unit will meet in Chennai tomorrow morning to decide its stand.

He added that the party does not want a BJP-backed government in the state and believes the verdict is clearly in favour of a “secular government”.

NDTV, quoting sources, indicated that Congress is likely to extend support to TVK, with the central leadership giving full autonomy to the state unit to make an independent decision. Other parties may also join the proposed coalition, sources added.

However, before any government is formed, Vijay must officially stake claim before the Governor. Only after being invited can he take oath as Chief Minister.

Vijay’s stunning rise

For years, Vijay was one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, commanding a massive fan base and near-cult popularity among young voters.

When he launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, many critics dismissed it as a celebrity experiment.

But the election results have transformed him overnight into the central figure of Tamil Nadu politics.

TVK’s campaign focused on corruption, jobs, governance reform and generational change, while Vijay’s roadshows drew huge crowds across urban and semi-urban constituencies.

His appeal among first-time voters and women is seen as a key reason for the party’s rapid surge.

What happens next?

Vijay must officially stake claim before the Governor once he secures enough support.

If invited to form the government, he could soon take oath as Chief Minister—marking one of the most dramatic political journeys from cinema to state power in India.
