A 35-year-old Sub-Inspector committed suicide at his official residence inside Paraur police station of Shahjahanpur district in Uttar Pradesh, a senior police officer said on Friday.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashok Kumar Meena said that SI Varun Kumar, who was posted at Paraur police station, hanged himself and committed suicide inside his official residence late on Thursday night.

"The incident came to fore on Friday morning when Varun did not report for duty and the police personnel went to inquire," he said.

He said that the reason behind the suicide was not clear.

"Varun was a resident of Shamli district and his parents had died. He joined the police force in 2021 under the deceased dependent quota," he said.

The SP said that the body has been sent for postmortem examination and the matter was being investigated.
