Lucknow: A man, whose 17-year-old girlfriend died after he allegedly pushed her from the fourth floor of an apartment building in Lucknow, has been arrested after being shot in the leg by the police during an encounter on Friday, reported media.

Mohammed Sufian was absconding since Tuesday after his girlfriend Nidhi Gupta succumbed to injuries in a hospital.

According to media reports, the girl’s parents lodged a police complaint, alleging that Sufian was mounting pressure on her to convert for marriage. He had been harassing her for a year and had “trapped her in love”, they claimed.

The Uttar Pradesh Police formed a special team of nine police personnel and announced a cash reward of Rs 25,000 for any information on the accused.

On Tuesday, the victim’s parents visited Sufian’s house after they came to know about the relationship. Amid a heated argument, the girl ran up to the fourth floor and Sufian followed her. After a while, her parents heard a loud scream and discovered the girl had fallen to the ground.

Joint commissioner, law and order, Piyush Mordia told India Today that Sufian had approached the girl and both had been in a relationship for over a year. He had also gifted her a mobile phone.

The report said that the police have booked him under the sections of ‘unlawful conversion’ apart from murder charges.

The accused is undergoing treatment for the bullet injury, the report said.
