Azamgarh: An elderly couple was hacked to death by unidentified persons during suspected loot in Nizamabad area of Azamgarh district here in Uttar Pradesh, a police officer said here on Monday.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Anurag Arya said that Vishwanath (75), a resident of Qayamuddin Patti Parsa village, and his wife Santali Devi were killed with a sharp-edged weapon late on Sunday night.

"The bodies were spotted by the neighbours on Monday when they came out for morning walk," he said.

Inspector General of Police (IG) Azamgarh range Akhilesh Kumar and SP Arya reached the spot and inquired about the incident. A dog squad also inspected the crime scene.

The SP said that the family members and the neighbours were questioned during which suspicion of loot or property dispute has been raised.

"The manner in which the crime is committed and the jewellery of the deceased woman are missing hints towards loot. A team has been constituted to workout the case," he said.
