UP: 8 per cent votes polled till 9 am in fifth phase

Lucknow/UNI: Polling began at a slow pace as only 8.02 per cent of 2.25 crore votes were polled in the first two hours till 9 am for 61 seats spread over 12 districts in the fifth phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections on Sunday.

According to a report from the Chief Electoral Officer's office, a maximum 11.40 per cent votes were polled in the Kaushambi district, whereas Barabanki saw only 6.20 per cent turnout.

Among other districts, 8.65 per cent votes were polled in Amethi, 9.44 per cent in Ayodhya, 7.51 per cent in Bahraich, 8.78 per cent in Chitrakoot, 8.29 per cent in Gonda, 7.75 per cent in Pratapgarh district, 7.07 per cent in Allahabad, 7.48 per cent in Rae Bareli, 9.65 per cent in Shrawasti district and 8.58 per cent in Sultanpur district.

Additional Chief Electoral Officer BDR Tiwari said that the polling has continued peacefully.

"Reports of problems in electronic voting machines (EVM) at some places were received, cognizance of which was taken immediately," he said.

Chief Electoral Officer Ajay Kumar Shukla said that 2.25 crore voters, including 1.20 crore males and 1.05 crore females, are eligible to decide the electoral fortune of 693 candidates, including 90 women, in this phase.

He said that the polling is being held at 25,995 polling booths at 14,030 polling stations.
