Unnao rape case: Former BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar sentenced to life imprisonment

New Delhi/IBNS: Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Sengar was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court for raping a minor in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao in 2017, media reports said.

Sengar will have to pay a fine of Rs. 25 lakh in the case and also Rs. 10 lakh as compensation to the rape survivor.

The court on Monday convicted the former BJP MLA for committing the crime against a 16-year old woman when she had approached Sengar for help to get a job.

Another accused in the case, who was identified as Shashi Singh, has been acquitted.

The BJP expelled Sengar following an uproar over the case after the rape survivor in July this year met with an accident in which the former saffron party member was an accused.

Both the victim and her lawyer were critically injured in a July 28 car-truck collision on the National Highway near Rae Bareli in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Two aunts of the woman had been killed in the collision.

The rape case was filed when the young woman attempted to immolate herself outside the residence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in April 2018.

On the orders of the apex court, the CBI took over the probe in all the five cases related to the alleged rape.
