Union cabinet clears Citizenship Amendment Bill, to be tabled in Parl next week

New Delhi/IBNS: The union cabinet on Wednesday cleared the Citizenship Amendment Bill or CAB which will grant citizenship to non-Muslim refugees who came from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, media reports said.

The CAB aims to grant citizenship to refugees belonging to Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, Sikh, Jain and Parsi communities.

The bill, which is in the top priority list of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), will be tabled in parliament next week.

The BJP has already asked its MPs to be present in parliament.

Though the ruling party- which enjoys majority in the lower house of parliament- will easily pass the bill in Lok Sabha, the BJP will likely have to look for floor management in Rajya Sabha which is dominated by the Opposition.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has time and again said the Narendra Modi government will implement National Register of Citizens (NRC) across the nation after the passage of CAB.
