UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly describes attack on Indian High Commission in London by Khalistani elements as 'unacceptable'

London:  UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has described the attack by alleged Khalistani elements on the Indian  High Commission in London as 'unacceptable'.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said in a statement: "Acts of violence towards staff at the Indian High Commission in London are unacceptable and I have made our position clear to the High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami."

"The police investigation is ongoing and we are in close contact with the Indian High Commission in London and the Indian Government in New Delhi. We are working with the Metropolitan Police to review security at the Indian High Commission, and will make the changes needed to ensure the safety of its staff as we did for today’s demonstration," he said.

"We will always take the security of the High Commission, and all foreign missions in the UK, extremely seriously, and prevent and robustly respond to incidents such as this," the official said.

He said the UK wants to build deeper ties with India.

Following the crackdown on pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh on Saturday, a bunch of his supporters tried to vandalise the Indian High Commission’s office in London. One of them grabbed the tricolour and removed it from the flag post.

However, an official of the Indian High Commission in London snatched the Tricolour from the Khalistani supporter and threw out the Khalistan banner.

Officials from the mission said the "attempted but failed" attack had been foiled and that the tricolour was now flying "grander," a report in the media said.
