Two security personnel, three Jaish militants killed in Kashmir gunbattle

Srinagar, Feb 24 (IBNS): Two security personnel and three Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists died on Sunday in a gunbattle that took place in south Kashmir's Kulgam district.

The dead security personnel are deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Aman Kumar Thakur and an Army jawan named Havaldar Sombir.

"Wreath laying ceremony for our colleague #DySP Aman Kumar who attained #martyrdom today at #Kulgam was held at DPL #Srinagar," Kashmir zone police tweeted.

According to reports, the gunfight began at Turigam after cops went there following intelligence about the presence of a group of terrorists in the area. The DSP was injured in the neck and died while being flown to the army hospital.

Three other army men were injured in the attack. They are out of danger.

In a statement released later, police said, “In the ongoing encounter at Turigam Yaripora, we have lost a young colleague Dy. Superintendent of Police Operations Shri Aman Kumar Thakur while fighting terrorists in Kulgam today. We pay rich tributes to our colleague Martyr Dy SP Aman Kumar Thakur for his supreme sacrifice made in the line of duty today at Kulgam. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this critical juncture.”

Reports said the DSP is survived by his wife, parents and a six-year-old son.
