Panaji: Goa police arrested two people in connection with the alleged murder of Bharatiya Janata Party leader and actress Sonali Phogat.

According to Dy SP Jivba Dalvi, Sudhir Sagwan and Sukhwinder Wasi were arrested on Thursday.

The duo were named by Sonali’s brother, Rinku Dhaka in his complaint before Anjuna police on Wednesday.

Though initially it was reported that Sonali had died of heart attack but postmortem conducted later revealed that there were multiple blunt injuries on her body.

Opposition parties have intensified their attack on the Pramod Sawant-led government.

Former Deputy Chief Minister and Goa Forward Party President Vijay Sardesai has accused Sawant of jumping to conclusions.

"No doctor can be so brilliant to find out the cause of death by reading the news of death on @WhatsApp. By jumping to uninformed and premature conclusion @DrPramodPSawant has brought suspicion to not only this sensitive case but also, once again, to his prefix!," he tweeted.

Former Goa Congress President Girish Chodankar has demanded a fair probe into the incident.

"Government should give free hand to police and GMC (Goa Medical College) for fair probe. We must give clear signal to tourists visiting Goa about their safety so that our tourism industry does not suffer," he said.

Sawant has said the investigation is being monitored by the state Director General of Police and the police has complete freedom to take action in the case.
