TVK leader booked for social media post urging ‘Gen Z revolution’ after Karur tragedy
A senior leader of actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has been charged over a social media post urging Tamil Nadu’s youth to rise against what he described as a “wicked government.”
The comments by Aadhav Arjuna, General Secretary of TVK, appeared on X less than 48 hours after a stampede at a Vijay rally in Karur left 41 people dead.
His remarks, now deleted, have sparked outrage, particularly from the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
Police have booked Arjuna under Sections 192, 196(1)(b), 197(1)(d), 353(1)(b), and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
A screenshot of the post widely circulated online shows Arjuna calling for a “youth-led revolution,” citing protests in Sri Lanka and Nepal.
“Here also the youth will lead a revolution. That revolution is going to be the reason for a change in government. Under a wicked ruler even the laws turn wicked,” he wrote.
He also accused Tamil Nadu police of assaulting citizens and arresting people for expressing opinions online.
DMK MP Kanimozhi criticized the comments as “irresponsible” and warned that they risk inciting unrest.
NDTV, quoting TVK sources, however, distanced the party and its leader from Arjuna’s remarks. “The party and Vijay will never instigate people or violence."
The controversy comes as TVK faces mounting pressure over the Karur tragedy. Police have blamed the stampede on unsanctioned stops by Vijay’s campaign bus and an impromptu roadshow, describing it as a “deliberate display of political power.”
TVK has rejected the charge, alleging instead that police mismanagement and a power outage triggered the disaster.
Arjuna has since filed a petition in the Madras High Court, asking that Vijay not be prevented from meeting families of the victims. He has also demanded that the ongoing police inquiry into the stampede be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for impartiality.
The DMK has dismissed TVK’s claims of a conspiracy, maintaining that safety protocols were ignored by the organisers.
