Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar found dead at police headquarters; doctors suspect suicide
Agartala/IBNS: Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead inside his office chamber at the Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday.
The senior IPS officer was taken to Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, where doctors declared him dead after prolonged resuscitation efforts.
Preliminary information suggests that the death may be a case of suicide.
However, officials said the exact cause of death will be established only after a post-mortem examination and completion of the investigation.
Cause of death yet to be confirmed
Secretary to the Chief Minister Kiran Gitte said the circumstances surrounding Dhankar's death have not yet been officially established.
According to preliminary reports, the senior police officer was found hanging inside his office chamber.
However, authorities have not formally confirmed the cause of death and said the investigation is continuing.
Doctors attempted CPR for 48 minutes
Senior physician Dr Pradip Bhowmik of Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital said Dhankar was brought to the medical facility at around noon without any vital signs.
"When he was brought here around 12:00 pm, our attending doctor examined him. We could not find any pulse, blood pressure, temperature, or any other vital signs. Immediately, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was initiated in the emergency unit. A team of our experts provided CPR for about 48 minutes," Dr Bhowmik told the media.
"Despite all our efforts, we could not revive him, and at 12:48 pm, we officially declared him dead," he added.
Post-mortem to determine exact cause
Dr Bhowmik said it was not possible to determine the cause of death when the officer was brought to the hospital without vital signs.
He said the body would undergo a post-mortem examination, which would establish the precise cause of death.
When asked whether there were visible signs of hanging or other injuries, the doctor said the medical team's immediate priority had been to revive the patient and that such observations would be confirmed only through the post-mortem report.
Police launch investigation
Following the incident, senior police officers reached the police headquarters, secured the area and began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the DGP's death.
Police are yet to issue a detailed official statement on the incident. Investigators are examining the circumstances leading to the death, while the post-mortem findings are expected to provide further clarity.
