Triple Talaq bill to be tabled in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday

New Delhi, Jan 2 (IBNS): The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017, aka the Triple Talaq Bill, will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

In a historic move, the Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Triple Talaq Bill while defeating all amendments to it.

Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the Bill upholds the right of Muslim women.

However, the Bill was opposed by MPs from RJD, AIMIM, BJD, AIADMK and All India Muslim League, who called it arbitrary in nature.

Experts have opined that the Bill may not be passed immediately, as the incumbent BJP lacks majority in the Rajya Sabha and the Congress had opposed the imprisonment and maintenance clauses of the Triple Talaq Bill.

However, the BJP is confident of achieving its goal of passing the Bill.
