Triple Talaq bill might be a 'test' for the government in the Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, July 25 (IBNS): The triple talaq bill has been tabled in the lower house of the Parliament today. Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad introduced the bill in the Lok Sabha. It is expected that the lower house will be witnessing unruly scenes as the opposition parties led by Congress is vehemently opposing the bill in it's current form.

Terming the bill as  'gender equality', Prasad said, "We can't let our Muslim sisters suffer. It the issue of women's right." The bill includes a provision of three year jail term for a Muslim man who issues a triple talaq to his wife for a divorce.

The opposition parties claim that this criminality clause might be misused by both police as well as government. "We will oppose the bill, in it's current form, tooth and nail and if the government remains adamant, we'll press for a division," said Congress MP K.Suresh ,who also happens to be the chief whip of the party in LS, to news agency ANI.

The bill is expected to be passed in the LS. However in the upper house of Parliament -- the Rajya Sabha -- the government is likely to face the heat as it doesn't have the numbers out there. Beside the opposition , the fence sitters like Biju Janata Dal, YSR Congress Party and Telangana Rashtriya Samity too are expected to oppose the
bill in it's current form. To add salt to the wounds , ruling NDA's Janata Dal United too are opposing the bill in it's current form.

It may be recalled that during the first tenure of Narendra Modi's government, the bill cleared the LS but got stuck in the RS as the opposition rejected the bill which led to the bill being lapsed.

The parties want the Triple Talaq bill to be sent to a parliamentary committee for further discussion.
