Trade Unions go on two-day strike from today

New Delhi, Jan 8 (IBNS): The two-day national-wide strike called by central trade unions commenced from midnight on Tuesday.

The strike, which has the support of almost all major independent federations of central employees, state employees and the employees of banks, insurance, telecom, and other service sectors, is expected to have major impact in states such as West Bengal and Kerala, where the Left has a sizable presence.

The strike has been called by the unions to protest against the policies for workers taken by the Narendra Modi-led Union government.

According to reports, farmers are also supposed to join the agitation to protest against the Centre's failure to address agrarian distress and to save farmers’ lands from corporates.

The central trade unions, says The Indian Express, accuses the Narendra Modi government of ignoring their demands on minimum wage, social security and guard against privatisation of public and government sectors.
