TMC's Mahua Moitra moves SC against new citizenship law, fails to get urgent hearing

| @indiablooms | Dec 13, 2019, at 12:10 pm

New Delhi/IBNS: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra on Friday moved the Supreme Court challenging the validity of the controversial citizenship law which will grant citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Parsi, Buddhist, Jain, Christian but not Muslim refugees who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan before 2015.

Though Moitra's lawyer sought an urgent hearing, he was directed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde to go to the mentioning lawyer for a date.

The lawyer has urged the concerned bench to take up the plea on Friday or coming Monday.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, which became a law with President Ram Nath Kovind's assent on Thursday, stoked controversy right from day one with several opposition parties alleging that the CAB violates Article 14 which provides equality before law.

Earlier the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) had moved the top court challenging the validity of the bill (now a law).

Congress MP Kapil Sibal will advocate the IUML in the court.

The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Monday midnight with a thumping majority and by the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday with 125 MPs voting in favour of it.
