TMC to back Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi in Rajya Sabha polls

Kolkata, Mar 9 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday announced that her party Trinamool Congress will back Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

"The party will support Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi for the fifth seat," Banerjee said.

Banerjee made the announcements after the party's extended core-committee meeting. 

Apart from Singhvi, Banerjee named four other names as its candidates for the upcoming polls.

The four TMC candidates for the polls are Nadimul Haque, Subhashish Chakraborty, Abir Ranjan Biswas and Dr Santanu Sen.

Election for the five seat became necessary as terms of  Kunal Ghosh, Bibek Gupta and Nadimul Haque of the party and Tapan Sen of the CPI-M will end in April.

Former Railway Minister Mukul Roy has also resigned from the Rajya Sabha.

He left the TMC recently to join the BJP.
