Tamil Nadu shutdown : M K Stalin and top opposition leaders court arrest demanding Cauvery water
The leaders, who courted arrest, also included Kanimozhi (DMK) and MDMK's Vaiko.
Most shops and business establishments remained closed in Chennai, while very few private buses were seen on the roads.
The state Government, however, made sure normal functioning of the state-run buses, while flights remained unaffected. Education institutions and Government offices were also open.
The shutdown has been called by a platform of farmers and trade unions demanding that Karnataka release its share of Cauvery water for Tamil Nadu.
The Cauvery issue has triggered unrest for more than a week in both the states, particularly in Karnataka, after the Supreme Court ordered release of 15,000 cusecs of water from the river daily to Tamil Nadu.
Though the top court later revised its order and asked Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs, the tension refused to die down with widespread agitation and violence taking place.
