Tamil Nadu Cabinet recommends releasing of seven convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case
Chennai, Sept 9 (IBNS): The Tamil Nadu Cabinet on Sunday decided to recommend state Governor Banwarilal Purohit to order the release of seven convicts linked to the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
State Minister D. Jayakumar told media that a letter on the issue will be sent to the Governor.
Jayakumar was quoted as saying by The Hindu that the recommendation has been made under Article 161 of the Constitution and the Governor has no other choice but to accept the recommendation.
Gandhi, who remained the Prime Minister between 1984 and 1989, was assassinated during an election campaign in Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, on May 21, 1991.
He was killed as a result of suicide bombing.
At least 14 other people were killed in the suicide bombing.
The convicts are in jail for last 27 years.
The convicts are Perarivalan, V Sriharan alias Murugan, T Suthendraraja alias Santham, Jayakumar, Robert Payas, P Ravichandaran and Nalini.
