New Delhi/IBNS: The central government has asked eight states to take immediate steps to tackle the fresh spike in coronavirus cases, media reports said.

Cases of new COVID-19 variant 'Omicron' are increasing at a rapid rate in big cities, mostly Delhi and Mumbai.

India's tally of daily COVID-19 cases is witnessing jumps every other day with the country reporting over 13,000 cases in the last 24 hours.

The number of cases of COVID-19 'Omicron' variant has surged to 961 with a huge chunk of it being reported from Delhi (263) and Maharashtra (252).

The spike occurs at a time the country is witnessing the festive season.

While a few states have banned public gathering on the eve of New Year, others are yet to control the crowd to stem the spread of the virus.

With the tally of cases swelling, health experts have warned of hospitals getting overwhelmed in a similar scenario that occurred during the COVID-19 second wave earlier this year.
