Take appropriate action to free Satras land from encroachers : Assam CM directs all district administration

Guwahati, Feb 12 (IBNS) : Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday directed the all district administration to free the Satras (16th century Vaishnavite monasteries) land from the encroachers across the state.

While visiting the Barpeta Satra, which was founded by vaishnavite saint Sri Sri Madhabdev in 1583, the Assam CM said that, all the Satras land to be freed from the encroachers.

“We have already taken measures to protect our heritage,” Sonowal said.

The Assam CM directed the district administration to take appropriate action to free the Satras land from encroachers.

Over thousand bighas land of most of the Satras of the state are under encroachment.

Alone In Barpeta district, more than 2000 bighas of Satra land are under encroachment in Barpeta, Moinbori, Kaljhar, Jania, Bahari, Kanara, Mandia, Sundaridiya, Gomura and several other Satras.

While taking part as the chief guest in the 3rd Biennial Conference of the Barpeta Sakha Satra Samaj at Barpeta Road on Sunday, the Assam CM said that, Srimanta Sankardeva, Madhabdeva, Harideva and Damodardeva established humanistic and intrinsic moral values in the society for which they worked their entire lives.

“Only spiritual empowerment can enable a person to attain true happiness in life. People must be inspired to follow the ideals of the great personalities to build a morally strong and vibrant society where people of all faiths, language and castes get equal opportunities,” Sonowal said.

Urging the people to never give up on a morally correct way of living, the Assam CM said that people belonging to all sections of the society must join hands and make Assam one of the best states through handwork and perseverance.

Asking the youth to follow the ideals of Srimanta Sankardeva and other great saints of the state in committing themselves to the service of the society, Sonowal said that only a morally correct and spiritually satisfying life can bring true happiness.  

Barpeta Sakha Satra Samaj also submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister on the occasion which contained various demands related to improvement of road communication to Satras, providing stable power supply to the Satras and preservation of Satras affected by erosion.

Assam CM Sonowal assured of taking all required measures for solving those problems.

The conference presided over by Burha Satradhikar of Barpeta Satra Basistha Deb Sarma saw participation of Minister for Cultural Affairs Naba Kumar Doley, State BJP president Ranjeet Dass, several MLAs , former MP of Rajya Sabha Kumar Deepak Das, former professor of Gauhati University Amalendu Chakravarti among others.

The conference was inaugurated by Deka Satradhikar of Barpeta Satra Nabajit Das.
